Course Description

Family Engagement is key to the success of all students. With over 50 years of research, family and community engagement in education is foundational for child development, student achievement, school improvement, and family and community well-being. This class will provide pre-service educators, practicing educators, educational leaders, or administrators the opportunity to explore current research, learn about relationship-building strategies, and explore tools that empower families to be active partners in education.

Course Objectives

  • Define family engagement and distinguish it from parental involvement, while examining the outcomes of effective school-family partnerships.
  • Identify and apply high-impact, family-friendly practices that foster engagement and make schools more welcoming to families and the community.
  • Assess a school's practices to enhance the school’s welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
  • Design a comprehensive action plan that reflects high-impact practices and supports meaningful connections between families and schools.

Course Dates & Location

August 24, 2026-Dec 7, 2026; Online, asynchronous. This self-paced course will be hosted in Canvas. 

Enrollment Options

All students must enroll in this Canvas course even if they choose to take it for undergraduate or graduate credit through the University of South Dakota (USD)! Those taking this course for 45 CECH/CEU only need to register with Canvas.
