Course Description

Family engagement plays a critical role in student learning, school success, and community well‑being. Grounded in more than 50 years of research, this course explores the core beliefs of family engagement and how strong partnerships between schools and families support positive outcomes for students at all grade levels. Participants will examine the difference between family engagement and traditional parental involvement and learn why meaningful, relationship‑based practices matter.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the basics of family engagement based on the core beliefs of family engagement.
  • Understand research-based family engagement strategies they can incorporate into their professional practice.
  • Reflect on family engagement and partnership practices in their classroom, school, district, or organization.
  • Create a short action plan that supports family engagement in their classroom, school, district, organization.

Course Dates & Location

July 6 - August 3, 2026; Virtual, asynchronous. This self-paced course will be hosted in Canvas.

All students must enroll in this Canvas course even if they choose to take it for graduate credit through the University of South Dakota (USD). Those taking this course for 15 CECH/CEU only need to register with Canvas. Those wishing to take this course for graded college credit must also register and pay with USD. Link below.
