Course Description
As secondary educators, you are the final stop before students enter a workforce and higher education system that is rapidly integrating AI. This course is designed to move beyond teacher productivity and focus on student adaptability. The goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to help students not just use AI, but understand when, why, and how to use it responsibly to build durable skills and protect authentic learning. This isn't about becoming an AI expert; you likely don't have the time and interest in that. It's also not about adding more screen time to your students' lives. We know students are already spending significant time on devices, and research from books like The Anxious Generation and The Digital Delusion reminds us of the real costs of constant digital engagement. Instead, this course is about selective and purposeful technology integration. Most of your instruction should remain grounded in a combination of traditional, time-tested methods such as direct instruction, discussion, experiential learning, and meaningful human interaction. But when we have an opportunity to transform a learning experience with AI, to redefine a task in ways that increase engagement and rigor, it's worth exploring. We are not interested in using AI to do what students could already do with traditional methods such as asking AI to brainstorm essay topics for a group project instead of the group talking it through together. We're looking for those moments where AI enables learning experiences that weren't possible before. Those moments should be intentional, strategic, and worth the trade-off of screen time.
Course Goals
- Explore the new reality of AI in schools and identify strategies being used to protect academic integrity and authentic student learning
- Examine the durable skills students need in an AI-infused world and explore how artificial intelligence impacts the role of thinking, effort, and productive struggle in learning
- Analyze how AI challenges traditional assessment practices and identify why many current assessments no longer reflect authentic learning.
- Summarize how AI can be integrated into classroom learning and evaluate instructional strategies that build durable skills while supporting responsible student use of AI
- Design an AI-enhanced lesson that builds durable skills, makes thinking visible, and uses AI to support rather than replace the learning process
