Course Description
"De-Escalation" is a crucial course that equips paraprofessionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage and support students during challenging behavioral situations. The course begins with a compelling narrative that highlights the importance of understanding and responding appropriately to the escalation cycle. Through a series of engaging BHSSC-created videos, reflective exercises, and assessments, participants will gain a deep understanding of the different stages of the escalation cycle and how both students and staff respond during each phase. The course explores various staff responses and knowledge, providing paraprofessionals with the tools to assess their own reactions and develop a repertoire of effective strategies. Participants will learn and practice simple, yet powerful de-escalation techniques and interventions that they can use to support students in regaining emotional control and promoting a safe, positive learning environment. By the end of the course, paraprofessionals will feel confident in their ability to recognize and respond to escalating situations, ultimately contributing to a more supportive and inclusive educational setting.
