Course Description

"Empowering Students to Be Independent" is a transformative course that equips paraprofessionals with the knowledge and strategies necessary to foster student autonomy and self-reliance. The course begins with an inspiring narrative that highlights the significance of empowering students to take ownership of their learning and personal growth. Through a series of engaging BHSSC-created videos, reflective exercises, and assessments, participants will gain a deep understanding of the importance of promoting independence and the impact it has on student success. The course explores a range of techniques and tools that paraprofessionals can employ to support student independence, including the effective use of the prompting hierarchy. Participants will learn how to select appropriate prompts based on individual student needs and gradually fade these prompts to facilitate greater independence over time. By the end of the course, paraprofessionals will possess a comprehensive toolkit of strategies to empower students, enabling them to become confident, self-directed learners who are prepared for success both within and beyond the classroom.
