Course Description

"Functional Skills" is an essential course that equips paraprofessionals with the knowledge and understanding necessary to effectively support students in developing crucial skills for success in academic, social, and life settings. The course begins with a compelling narrative that highlights the significance of functional skills and their impact on student independence and overall well-being. Through a series of informative BHSSC-created videos, reflective exercises, and assessments, participants will gain a deep understanding of the purpose and importance of functional skills instruction. The course explores the role of paraprofessionals in supporting students within functional skills classrooms, providing guidance on how to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters skill acquisition and generalization. Participants will learn strategies for assisting students in developing essential skills such as self-care, communication, social interaction, and problem-solving, while also promoting independence and self-advocacy. By the end of the course, paraprofessionals will possess a strong foundation in supporting functional skill development and feel equipped to provide appropriate and meaningful support to students in functional skills classrooms.
