Course Description

"Social & Emotional Learning" is a transformative course that equips paraprofessionals with the knowledge and understanding necessary to support students in developing essential social and emotional skills. The course begins with an engaging narrative that highlights the importance of social and emotional learning in fostering student well-being and academic success. Through a series of informative BHSSC-created videos, reflective exercises, and assessments, participants will gain a deep understanding of the neurological basis of social and emotional learning, exploring the roles different parts of the brain play in regulating emotions and behaviors. The course delves into the concept of regulation and dysregulation, providing paraprofessionals with the tools to recognize and respond to students' emotional states in the school setting. Participants will learn and practice a range of strategies to help students feel safe, connected, and regulated, including creating a supportive classroom environment, building positive relationships, and implementing effective co-regulation techniques. By the end of the course, paraprofessionals will possess a comprehensive understanding of social and emotional learning and feel empowered to support students in developing the skills necessary for success in school and beyond.
