Course Description
"Understanding the ABC's of Behavior" is a foundational course that equips paraprofessionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively identify, understand, and address student behaviors in the classroom setting. The course begins with an engaging narrative that emphasizes the importance of recognizing the underlying factors that contribute to student behaviors. Through a series of informative BHSSC-created videos, reflective exercises, and assessments, participants will learn about the ABC model of behavior, which focuses on Antecedents, Behaviors, and Consequences. The course explores how to identify and understand antecedent and setting events that may trigger or reinforce certain behaviors, providing paraprofessionals with the tools to proactively address and prevent challenging situations. Participants will also learn various strategies to effectively change behaviors, including positive reinforcement, behavior replacement, and environmental modifications. The course also delves into the role of consequences in shaping behavior, helping paraprofessionals understand how to select and implement appropriate consequences that promote positive behavior change. By the end of the course, paraprofessionals will possess a comprehensive understanding of the ABC model and feel empowered to apply this knowledge to create a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters student success.
