Course Description

This is a reflective course that provides educators the opportunity to enrich their teaching and learning practices through participation in the 2027 TIE Conference. Scheduled for Spring 2027, this hybrid course combines the immersive experience of attending South Dakota's premier education event with reflective online assignments via Canvas. Through USD's EDFN 592: Special Topics course, participants can earn 1-3 graduate credits while exploring breakout sessions, keynotes, Deep Dives, and networking opportunities across five learning tracks: Literacy & Knowledge Building; Mathematics & Problem Solving; CTE & Career-Connected Learning; AI, Technology & Learning Design; and Leadership, Systems & Practice. The course focuses on identifying and implementing key educational strategies in participants' classrooms while providing multiple pathways for professional growth through conference participation, implementation projects, professional development resource sharing, and Deep Dive/Innovation Exchange participation.

Conference Attendance Required

To participate in this course and earn graduate credit, full attendance at both days of the TIE Conference 2027 (Thursday, April 8 and Friday, April 9, at the Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown) is required. More information on the conference can be found here: https://compass.bhssc.org/tie27. Please register for the conference before enrolling in this course.

Course Goals

  1. Analyze and evaluate conference sessions to identify 3-5 key ideas or strategies that could be implemented to improve teaching practice and student learning outcomes.
  2. Create a detailed implementation plan outlining the key ideas chosen, required resources, a timeline for rollout, and how effectiveness will be measured.
  3. Reflect critically on the conference experience, key takeaways, and the potential impact on professional growth and student achievement.
  4. Develop and share professional development content, create and distribute an online resource for a PLC or PLN, or participate in a Deep Dive or the Innovation Exchange (for additional credits).
  5. Complete a second track option synthesizing learning across multiple conference tracks (for 3-credit option).

Estimated Time: 15-45 Hours (Based on Credit Option)

  • 1 Credit: 15 hours (conference attendance and basic reflection)
  • 2 Credits: 30 hours (one of: additional implementation project, professional development resource sharing, or Deep Dive/Innovation Exchange participation)
